Since 2011, the Peter Stuyvesant Little League (PSLL) has played a charity softball game bringing coaches from all divisions together for an annual baseball game donating the proceeds to a nonprofit selected by the coaches. This year, our annual event will benefit the International Academy of Hope (iHOPE), a highly specialized school in New York City providing an individualized curriculum to meet the needs of students who have experienced traumatic brain injuries.
Last year, Peter Stuyvesant Little League launched the "Challenger Division" so that boys and girls with physical and developmental disabilities between the ages of 4 and 18 can enjoy the game of baseball in a supportive, non-competitive environment. After seeing the success of creating this inclusive team, we decided to partner with iHOPE, where three of our players attend school. For one of the students on the team, Allegra, this was her first time on a little league team, and her mother Elizabeth had this to say about the experience:
"The PSLL Challenger Division has given Allegra the opportunity to have an experience that many typically developing children have - play on a Little League team! Allegra plays with children who have a wide range of special needs. Each child is paired with one or two volunteer buddies, mostly other kids who play on regular league teams, and a few adults. Allegra loves hearing everyone cheer for her when her buddy runs around the bases with her in her wheelchair! She also loves the attention she receives from some of the more abled special needs kids and the buddies. It's a fun activity for all involved: the players, the buddies, and the families!"
-Elizabeth, Allegra's mother
All proceeds from the event will support Allegra and her classmates at iHOPE! The $50 participation fee for coaches can be made below through May 31st.
